Milestone 120M Nw Of Halloon Crossing Cottage

This milestone, located 120 meters northwest of Halloon Crossing Cottage in St Enoder, was erected around 1835 to 1852. It has a rectangular shape and stands approximately 0.61 meters high, featuring a pent top and a dressed front face. The front is inscribed with "NEWQUAY / 7" in sans serif capitals, while the back remains undressed. The entire stone is painted white, with the lettering highlighted in black.

Historically, the A392 ran along St Columb Road until a bypass was constructed in the 1990s. Although the road was never turnpiked, it served as the main connection between Newquay and the A30, Cornwall's main road. In the 19th century, Newquay transformed from a small fishing port to a significant site for china clay export and eventually a holiday resort, largely due to improved road access. The Newquay Highway Board was established under the Highways Act of 1835 and was responsible for installing milestones, including this one, on the routes to Newquay via Indian Queens, Brighton Cross, and Mitchell. The style and placement of these milestones suggest they were likely erected between the establishment of the Highway Board in 1835 and the installation of nearby milestones in Colan parish in 1852.

This milestone is designated at Grade II for its historic interest as a well-preserved example of an early to mid-19th century stone, its intact condition in its original location, and its contribution to a group of milestones on roads leading to Newquay, several of which are also designated at Grade II.
