Description

The Former Bodmin Depot Hospital, now known as Neon Nightclub, is a Grade II listed building located on Castle Canyke Road in Bodmin. Built in 1881, it was designed by Major H.C. Seddon of the Royal Engineers for use as a hospital within a barracks. The structure is made of squared rubble with stone dressings, featuring a slate roof and stone ridge and lateral side stacks with a cornice.

The building has a double-depth plan for administration and surgery, complemented by a single pavilion plan ward wing at the southern end. It stands two storeys high with a basement and has a symmetrical facade with a 3:3 window arrangement. The administration block is distinguished by twin coped gables on moulded kneelers, ashlar cill and lintel bands, and an eaves cornice. The central gabled porch features a round-arched doorway, flanked by 4/4-pane sash windows. The windows include two-light square mullions and transoms with 4/4-pane sashes, along with a central tripartite window on the first floor. The ward block mirrors this style with tall windows and a central tripartite window in the end gable, while the rear corner includes a sanitary annexe with a parapet and narrow transom windows.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building exemplifies a standard hospital design used in Localisation depots, with a similar example found at Brock Barracks in Reading. The corner annexe is a notable feature of the pavilion plan hospitals. The Cardwell reforms led to the redistribution of barracks across the country to foster local connections and aid recruitment. This hospital is part of one of the two most complete surviving depots, notable for its stone construction and its connection to the former Militia armoury.
