Description

629-1/3/10004 ST NICHOLAS STREET (South West side) NRA offices, Bodmin depot former

GV II

Married quarters, now offices. 1881, designed at the War Office by Major HC Seddon RE; converted c1980. Squared rubble with dressings and slate roof I-shaped single-depth plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storey; 9-window range. Symmetrical front with end gables set forward, cill and lintel bands and eaves cornice, and plain surrounds; entrances to the inner sides of the gables; windows grouped 3:1:3 to the central section, and triple lights to the gables; late C20 uPVC casements. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: an example of a standard design for the Localisation Depots, providing accommodation for married soldiers. The Cardwell reforms redistributed barracks around the country to encourage local connections and assist recruitment. Married quarters were a relatively new type within barracks, and this is an early example of the type. It forms part of one of the two most complete examples of the depots, with Reading, (gv), unusual in being built in stone and attached to the former Militia armoury (qv).
