Description
The milestone west of Doublebois dates from around 1834 and is a triangular stone with a top that slopes slightly towards the front. It features incised lettering in Roman capitals and Arabic numerals, with the western face reading 'L 3 ½' and the eastern face 'B 9'. Originally, the stone was painted white with black letters, but very little paint remains today.
This milestone was erected as part of the improvements made by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, established by an Act of Parliament in 1769 to enhance the roads leading into Bodmin. The Trust's initial route to Liskeard was indirect, and in November 1834, plans were published for a new, more direct route through the Glynn Valley. Along this new route, nine milestones were installed, of which eight still exist today, including this one.
The milestone is designated at Grade II because it remains in its original location and is intact. It serves as a notable example of an early 19th-century milestone, reflecting the standardization of roads and the establishment of turnpikes to support the transport needs of Cornwall's growing industrial landscape during that period.
