Description
This late 19th-century milestone is located on the south side of the A3072, directly opposite Brooks Garden Centre. Made from slate, the stone has straight edges and a canted front surface that shows traces of white paint. The deeply incised lettering, with some remaining black paint, reads: "HOLSY 7 BUDE 2 ½ STRATTON I."
The milestone is part of a series established between Bude and Highampton in Devon during the 1870s when the road was improved. Of this group, three milestones have survived in Devon, all listed at grade II, and three remain in Cornwall along this route, including this one. It is also marked on the Ordnance Survey map from 1880.
This milestone is significant for its unusual slate material and design, its legibility, and its original location. It has good group value with other listed milestones of the same design along this stretch of road and serves as a physical marker of the area's transport history.
