Description
BUDE STRATTON
505/0/10020 A3072 01-OCT-10 Milestone opposite Brooks Garden Centr e (NGR SS2398305435)
GV II A late-C19 milestone standing on the south side of the A3072 opposite Brooks Garden Centre. The slate stone has straight edges, with a canted front surface containing traces of white paint. The deeply incised lettering, with some black paint remaining, reads: HOLSY 7 BUDE 2 ½ STRATTON I.
HISTORY The milestone is one of a series of milestones between Bude and Highampton in Devon, erected in the 1870s when the road was improved. Of the group, three stones have survived in Devon (listed at grade II), and of the Cornish ones of this stretch, three survive, of which this is one. The milestone is marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1880.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION This milestone on the A3072, opposite Brooks Garden Centre, merits listing at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
- Despite being a relatively late example, this late-C19 milestone is of an unusual material (slate) and design, is fully legible, and survives in its original location. * It has good group value with a number of other listed milestones of identical design marking this stretch of road. * It reflects the development of this particular stretch of historic road use and is a physical marker of the area's transport history.
