Description

Bowhill Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the 17th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth, plastered, and features a gabled-end slate roof with a black brick chimney at each end. The house originally had a three-room, through-passage plan, with two higher-end rooms that have been extended by an early 19th-century addition, creating a double-depth plan. The lower end of the original range remains and connects to a 19th-century wing, which is now part of the Duchy of Cornwall Office.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. The front facade is symmetrical, featuring three windows from the 19th-century addition, with hornless sashes throughout. The first-floor windows have four panes each, while the windows flanking the central doorway have six panes with margin panes. A 19th-century verandah with a glazed roof supported by iron struts extends across the entire front.

To the right, the earlier range is set back and has a lower roof line. It is also two storeys high and features a three-window range of 20th-century three- and four-light casements. Inside the older range, there is a fireplace at the right-hand end, chamfered beams, and an 18th-century door. An unusual glazed partition, likely from the 18th or early 19th century, made with crown glass, runs parallel to the front wall of the lower end, seemingly intended to light a workshop, although it has no good source of light.
