Description

Rose Cottages are a pair of early 19th-century cottages, standing on the north side of Parsonage Street in Bradninch. They represent a remodelling of an earlier house, originally planned as a three-room, through-passage dwelling. The cottages are constructed of cob with a stone plinth, and have plastered gable ends under a slate roof.

The symmetrical three-window range of No.4 (on the right) has pointed Gothick windows with two lights, featuring Y tracery and latticed leading; the upper window above the door includes a roundel in the head. The recessed, pointed doorway has muntins and studding. No.2 has a slightly higher roof ridge and formerly incorporated a stable on the ground floor. It has two first-floor windows similar to those of No.4, but without latticed leading. A 20th-century two-light window sits to the left of the central planked door, while a formerly pointed window has been altered to a square head on the right. A 20th-century door is also on the right-hand side. The left-hand end abuts the adjacent property, and the right-hand end has a pointed window on each floor, matching the front elevation.

The rear elevation includes an external lateral stack now located within a 19th-century and later lean-to addition. A 19th-century three-light window is visible, along with a 20th-century gabled dormer. Inside No.2, no original features remain, but concealed beams and an exposed fireplace with stone jambs and a timber lintel, likely dating before the 19th century, are present. Early 19th-century plaster cornices and alcoves are also visible, along with coloured glass margin panes and a single reused 17th-century glass fragment within the central window roundel.
