Description
St Disen's Hall is a parish hall built as a Sunday School in 1838, with a single-storeyed extension known as 'Strong's Room' added in 1908. It features high-quality snecked volcanic trap ashlar under a gabled slate roof. The main hall is two storeys tall and occupies a corner site. The front facing Fore Street has a one-bay design with a coped gable, which includes a shield with a faded inscription, rusticated quoins, and a 2-light square-headed window on the first floor with stone jambs and a mullion. The ground floor has a similar window, but with an additional transom.
On the Church Street elevation, the main hall has three bays. The two-light windows above are identical to the first-floor window on the front. Below, there are two 2-light windows with transoms to the right of a segmentally-headed arched doorway, which has a moulded surround in Ham Hill stone and is topped with a square-headed hood mould with stops. Above the door, the words 'SAINT DISEN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL' are inscribed. Strong's Room has one entrance and features one 3-light window and two 2-light windows with stone jambs and mullions.
Inside, the main hall includes a stage with a proscenium arch supported by two Ionic fluted pilasters. There is a wooden gallery added in 1908 and a 20th-century false ceiling. The most notable interior feature is the early 20th-century coloured glass by Morris and Wilfred Drake, which includes three roundels per light with various heraldic motifs commemorating families connected with Bradninch. One roundel features an intriguing piece of fake 17th-century work that lists the names of the makers and donor, Rev. Charles Croslegh. The Strong Room contains a 3-light window, possibly by the Drake firm, depicting scenes from the history of the ancient borough of Bradninch. St Disen's Hall is situated at the end of a long row of houses and is an important part of this group.
