Description
The churchyard gates and gatepiers at the west end of Church Street in Bradninch were built in 1836, with a later addition of an overthrow. They serve as the main entrance to the churchyard from the town. The structure features granite piers topped with caps on square plinths, and wrought-iron gates and railings. There are two octagonal piers with double gates between them, and a single gate on the right side when viewed from Church Street, which is fixed to the other side. The ironwork displays intricate tracery patterns, including pointed arches and quatrefoils, along with a frieze of trefoils alternating with spearheads. The single gate does not appear in Spreat's engraving from 1842, suggesting it may be a later addition, possibly created around the same time as the overthrow, which includes scrollwork and a central lantern. The date is recorded in the D.R.O. Vestry Minutes Book.
