Description

Lower Doggaport is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from the mid-17th century. It features plastered cob and rubble walls and has a gable-ended roof made of corrugated asbestos. The building includes a brick axial stack and a projecting rubble front lateral stack. The layout consists of a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end on the right possibly rebuilt in the early 18th century, including an integral outbuilding and a store above the lower room with external access. The hall is heated by the front lateral stack, while the unheated inner room has an unusual projecting window bay instead of the hall. This inner room has been divided lengthwise into two narrow rooms.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front, primarily featuring early 20th-century two and three-light casements. There is a three-light 19th-century casement on the ground floor left, which, along with the window above, slightly projects and is topped by an ovolo-moulded wall-plate. A 20th-century plank door leads to the passage on the right. The roofline drops beyond the lower end, which has stone steps leading to a first-floor doorway and the outbuilding beyond.

Inside, the hall has chamfered axial ceiling beams and a fireplace with a cambered and chamfered wooden lintel. The lower room features a narrow chamfered wooden lintel over its fireplace. On the first floor, there is a 17th-century wooden chamfered doorframe. The roof timbers over the higher end of the house date from the 17th century and consist of substantial principal rafters with trenched purlins and a straight collar set into the trusses with notched lap joints. This house remains largely unspoilt by 20th-century modernization, preserving its traditional exterior.
