Description
Culm Davy Farmhouse is a detached house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with later extensions and alterations. It is constructed of plastered rubble, likely with some cob, and features a gable end slate roof. The original layout was a three-room, through-passage plan house built using jointed cruck construction, with the higher end located to the right of the passage. The hall and service end are open to the roof, indicated by smoke-blackened roof timbers, while the inner room appears to have always been unheated or possibly two storeys, separated from the hall by a partition that extends from the ground floor to the apex of the roof.
Floors and stacks were added in the late 16th or 17th century; the hall is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the passage, and the service end is heated by an end stack, which has become axial due to a later extension. The farmhouse has two storeys and features a front with a five-window range. All the casement windows, including four on the ground floor, are from the 20th century.
The interior was inaccessible during the survey visit, but details from the Devon County Council Sites and Monuments Register indicate massive roof timbers on jointed crucks with wind braces. The central truss, likely over the hall, has arched braces, and there is a closed truss between the hall and inner room, which is timber framed with wattle and daub infilling. A pointed arched doorway is present in the partition.
