Description

Culm Davy Chapel is a chapel dating from the 15th century that underwent thorough restoration in the 19th century. It is constructed of random rubble flint and features a gable end slate roof with coping on the gable walls. The chapel has a simple, undivided rectangular plan, with a west bellcote and a south porch.

On the exterior, the west double bellcote, which is supported internally, is entirely from the 19th century, as is the three-light Perpendicular west window, which includes a hood mould and head terminals. The north wall has no windows, while the south side consists of four bays, including the porch, with a blind bay to the west and renewed two-light Perpendicular windows in the other bays. The porch features a late 15th-century archway with composite concave and wavy moulding. The inner doorway has a two-centred arch set in a square head, adorned with foliated spandrels, showcasing some of the best medieval craftsmanship in the chapel. The east window is a renewed three-light window with a transom.

Inside, the chapel has an unceiled wagon roof, with some medieval ribs. There is a combined piscina and aumbrey under a trefoil head. A notable wall monument, described as primitive, is dedicated to Anne Carvis of Ashculm, who died in 1705. This monument features a classical entablature with an effigy lying on its side, and the apron includes angel faces.
