Description
Culmstock Beacon is a warning beacon with origins dating back to the medieval period or the 16th century, although it was rebuilt after a collapse in 1870. Constructed from local stone rubble, this small beehive-shaped building has a circular plan, with walls that rise to a slightly projecting eaves beneath a rounded roof. The south side features a low flat-headed doorway, and there is a circular opening in the roof that measures approximately 1 meter across. The walls include two loops and some narrow internal ledges, which are believed to have supported fire bars. This beacon is marked as "Black Down Beacon" on Donn's map of Devon from 1765.
