Description

Knowle Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed of random rubble chert and features a gable end corrugated iron roof. The house has a two-room plan with rooms of unequal size. There may have originally been a central passage, as indicated by the remains of a rough partition behind the axial stack fireplace, but this area is now occupied by a bathroom. The right-hand room is heated by an internal end stack, while the left-hand room is heated by an axial stack, both with brick shafts.

The front exterior has a three-window range, consisting of one three-light and two two-light 19th-century casement windows on the first floor, and two 19th-century three-light casement windows on the ground floor, one on either side of a pair of doors (one planked and one glazed), as the house was formerly two cottages. There is a breezeblock porch and a later continuous rear outshut, likely from the 19th century, which includes 19th-century windows and a door.

Inside, there is one chamfered ceiling cross beam with hollow step stops in each room. The details of the fireplaces are obscured but still survive behind the current grates. The roof trusses feature long straight principals and large roughly finished purlins.
