Description
The Wagon House at Middle Mackham Farm is a building from the early 19th century, constructed from flint or chert rubble. It features a corrugated-iron clad roof with open gable ends. The structure is tall and rectangular, consisting of two and a half bays and is open-ended; however, the west end has been temporarily blocked with corrugated-iron sheets. The north and south side walls made of flint are blind.
Inside, the building has a two and a half bay roof supported by collar trusses, with the collars lapped and bolted to the principals, which are crossed and pegged at the apex. It includes two tiers of staggered purlins set on the backs of the principals and a diagonally-set ridgepiece, with common rafters and thatching battens that are largely intact. This wagon house was built to protect loaded wagons from rainstorms and is a rare example of this type of farm building.
