Description

A range of farmbuildings, likely dating from the 18th century, forms a courtyard around Town Farm (listed separately). The buildings consist of stables, a barn, a linhay, and a detached pump house. They are constructed of rubble with corrugated iron roofs. The stables include pigeon holes in the loft space above. A segmental arched doorway, fitted with a ‘stable’ door, is flanked by two smaller segmental arched windows that have been reduced in size with wooden slats. The linhay on the south side has been largely altered, with a new tallet floor and fronts faced in, and the roof covered in wrought iron. A single storey shed is located at the east gable end. The barn on the east side of the courtyard features ‘stacked’ pigeonholes arranged in a 4-3-2-1 pattern in the gable end. Four original trusses remain, although the threaded purlins have been removed. A large extended gateway opening, with a plank door and timber lintel, is situated on the street side. The pump house, located within the courtyard in front of the farmhouse, is built of rubble and cob with an original slate roof and features two door openings facing the farmhouse. The farm buildings and Town Farmhouse together represent a significant village farmstead, centrally located within Braunton and reflecting the town’s historic layout and the presence of the Great Field.
