Description

These farm buildings, located west of Manor Farmhouse, date from the late 18th century. They are constructed from coursed gritstone and rubble, with roofs made of grey slate and stone slate. The range consists of three buildings: at the southern end is a three-storey square pigeoncote, which likely has a bull-house on the ground floor; in the center is a two-bay open cart shelter; and at the northern end is a two-storey, two-bay byre or stable with a hayloft above.

The pigeoncote features a wide doorway with a tri-stone and a bird entrance to the top floor, and it has a pyramid roof with a restored glazed cupola. The rear has a ground-floor doorway that has been reduced to a window with a wooden ventilator grille, a blocked first-floor window, and a low doorway on the second floor. The left return has a blocked first-floor doorway with a plain sill and lintel.

The cart shed has dressed stone end walls and a stone central pier that supports the wall plate, with later blocking. The byre or granary is built of rubble, and the yard front is overlaid by a later building. It features a small square window with a timber lintel below the eaves on the left side and a raised ridge stone for ventilation. The rear has an inserted doorway and a small square window below the eaves, while the right return has external steps leading to a low doorway with a plain sill and lintel.

Inside, the pigeoncote's ground floor has a chamfered cross-beam and untrimmed joists, with the upper stages reputed to have a brick lining. The cart shed includes two king-post trusses, with the tie beams made from reused timber. This range exemplifies the diverse building types found in an unplanned 18th-century farmyard.
