Description
The Church of St Paul is an Anglican church located on Main Street in Shadwell, built between 1841 and 1842 by architect R.D. Chantrell. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, topped with a stone slate roof, and designed in a Neo-Norman style. The church features a nave with four bays, which include round-headed windows, pilasters, and a corbel table. There is a west bellcote and a two-light window, while the east end is polygonal. A vestry was added to the northeast, featuring a three-light mullioned window with a hoodmould. The south porch is shallow and gabled, with a zigzag carved round arch.
Inside, the nave consists of three bays, with the windows containing re-set medieval and 19th-century glass. The roof is a queen-post design with ovolo-moulded arched braces. A wide chancel arch leads to a chancel that includes a carved wooden reredos by Martin Travers, showcasing large figures of St Peter and St Paul. The chancel ceiling features a wooden canopy with a dove. Additionally, there is a west gallery supported by four wooden columns, which houses an organ built by Adam and Smith in 1901 and later improved by M. Spink in 1988.
