Description
Nos. 22 and 24 on Old Street are two houses built in the late 16th century, originally constructed as one three-cell house. They are two storeys high, featuring a timber frame that is pebble-dashed. The roof is pantiled, having been thatched in the past. There is an axial chimney on the right and a gable chimney on the left, both of which have been rebuilt in 20th-century red brick.
No. 22 has late 20th-century small pane casement windows and a flush entrance door with a glazed panel. No. 24 features a 19th-century small-pane sash window at the ground floor and a small-pane casement above, along with a mid-19th-century six-panel door. Inside, the unmoulded framing from around 1600 is exposed, showcasing close studding and floor joists laid flat with a very slight chamfer. The roof has wind-braced clasped purlins. There is a well-fitted corner cupboard from the late 18th century. It appears that there was a chimney bay to the left of the hall from which the chimney has been removed, and an open fireplace, now blocked, to the right likely replaced it in the 17th or 18th century.
