Description
Chilton House and Mulbra House are two houses that were built as one in the late 16th century, with a possible earlier core. They feature a three-cell plan with a lobby entrance and have two storeys with five windows. The houses are timber-framed and plastered, topped with a plaintiled roof that has a detailed wooden eaves cornice. There is an axial chimney, with the shaft rebuilt in mid-20th century red brick.
At the ground storey, there are three early 18th century small pane sash windows with thick glazing bars, with those at No. 32 having been restored in the 20th century. The first storey includes various 18th, 19th, and 20th century casements. Notable features include two early 18th century doorways with Gibbs surrounds, pulvinated friezes, and pediments, and entrance doors with six fielded panels.
The late 16th century queenpost roof is partially intact, although most of the roof was rebuilt in pine during the 18th century. Mulbra House contains some massive unchamfered floor joists of 16th century type, while the framing is mainly concealed. This building is believed to have served as a town house in the 18th century and was previously a guildhall, though its construction seems to have occurred after the dissolution of the guilds in 1545.
