Description

This is a house and shop, dating to the 17th century with significant alterations in the mid-19th century. It originally comprised three rooms arranged around a central entrance hallway, and was later extended to the right. The building has a timber frame covered with plaster. The roof is covered in Roman pantiles and features a full row of 19th-century fleur-de-lys ridge tiles. A late-19th century chimney is constructed of red brick with gault brick quoins, and there is another 19th-century chimney on the right-hand gable. It has 19th-century casement windows. The front door to number 39 is a four-panelled design from the mid-19th century, while number 41 has a more modern glazed door. The original 17th-century timber framing is largely concealed, indicating that the house was originally one and a half storeys high before the walls were raised and the roof rebuilt in the 19th century. A large central chimney contains blocked open fireplaces.
