Description
These are two houses, originally built as one around 1530. The buildings were designed with a three-room plan. They are two storeys high. The houses have a timber frame and plastered walls. The upper floor of the north side projects over the street, with chamfered brackets supporting the overhang. Pilaster shafts with carved capitals were originally present, and two remain, one at each end of the building. The roof of No. 35 is thatched, while No. 37 has plain tiles. A late 16th-century chimney constructed of narrow red bricks is located centrally. The windows are 18th and 19th-century casements, with transoms on the ground floor. No. 35 retains the original cross-entry doorway, which has a chamfered, four-centred arched head. A plain-tiled, 20th-century lean-to porch has supporting posts that likely date back to the 16th century, with curved brackets at the top; these may have been salvaged from a previous porch in the same location. No. 37 has a 20th-century glazed panelled door. Internal timber framing is visible and includes double-ogee moulded main beams in the hall, close-studding with arch and tension wind-bracing combined, and open trusses with arch braces in the form of a four-centred arch. The late 16th-century chimney was integrated into the original cross-entry.
