Description
Nos. 52 and 53 Guildhall Street are a pair of houses, which may have originally been one house, dating from the 18th century. They are timber-framed and roughcast, topped with plaintiled roofs and a plain eaves soffit.
The exterior features two storeys, attics, and cellars, with a two-window range. All windows are sashes in flush cased frames; No. 52 has a single vertical glazing bar, while No. 53 has no glazing bars. There are two segmental-headed dormers covered in lead, each with 20th-century two-light casement windows. The matching doorcases have six-panel doors, with sunk panels; No. 52 has the top two panels glazed. At the back, there are two matching gabled wings with double Roman tiles.
The interior of No. 52 was not inspected, but No. 53 features a front room with a small chamfer on the main beam and curved stops. A chimney stack connects to the rear wing and has a winder stair beside it. The first-storey wall and ceiling timbers are all exposed, showcasing primary braces, bisected studs, some reused timbers, and small joists set on edge. In the north wall of the attic, the rafter line of the adjoining house, No. 54, is visible.
