Description
37 and 38 Westgate Street is a house and shop built in the mid-19th century. It features painted brickwork, a slate roof, and wide eaves soffits. The building is situated on a corner site with a quadrant corner and is part of a group that includes Nos. 50 and 51 Guildhall Street.
The exterior consists of two storeys and cellars, with a four-window range. The windows are sashes without glazing bars, set in plain reveals with flat arches and keystones. No. 37 has a central entrance featuring a six-panel door and a rectangular fanlight, framed by a doorcase with pilasters and a flat cornice hood. No. 38 has a double shop front with eight-pane windows divided by a transom and a central half-glazed shop door.
Notably, embedded in the south wall of No. 37 are a pair of 14th-century timber doorways with steeply arched heads, which are remnants of a former timber-framed building that was located at the corner of Westgate and St Andrew's Street South. There may be a continuation of the original house concealed within the current structure. The interior has not been inspected.
