Description

This milestone, dating from around 1742, was erected for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. It features a white freestone structure with a cast iron front plate that was added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. The milestone is a low square pillar, measuring about 400 millimeters square and 0.5 meters high, and is partly buried. The iron plate has a segmental head with a raised edge bead and raised lettering. The inscription reads 'LONDON 37/ BUNTINGFORD 6/ ROYSTON 1', with the first word of the inscription arranged in an arc. London Road is known as the Roman Ermine Street.
