Description

This milestone, dating from around 1742, is located on the west side of Therfield London Road (A10) and was established by the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. An iron plate was affixed to it around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. The milestone is made of white freestone and features a cast iron front plate. It is a low square pillar measuring about 400 millimeters square and 0.5 meters high, with part of it buried. The iron plate has a segmental head with a raised edge bead and raised lettering. The inscription reads 'LONDON 36/ BUNTINGFORD 5/ ROYSTON 2', with the first word of the inscription presented in an arc. London Road follows the route of the Roman Ermine Street.
