Description

This milestone is located on the west side of the A10, near the junction with Whiteley Lane. It dates from around 1742 and was created for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The front of the milestone is covered by an iron lettered plate, added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. The milestone is made of white freestone and features a cast iron front plate. It is a square stone pillar, approximately 400 mm square and 1 meter high, with a large front plate that has a segmental curved top and a raised bead around the plate. The inscription reads 'LONDON/34/BUNTINGFORD/3/ROYSTON/4', with the first two words raised in segmental arcs. Originally situated on High Road in Buckland village, it was relocated around 1970 and moved to its current location in 2017.
