Description

The Feathers Hotel is a coaching inn that has been converted into a hotel. It dates from the 18th century and was extended in the 19th century. The building is constructed of plum brick with stucco dressings and features steep old red tile hipped roofs, with a gable at the north end of the front. It is two stories tall and has five plus one windows along the front facing west. There is a low plinth with a continuous band that links the first-floor window sills. The upper windows have segmental arched stucco heads, while the ground floor windows have moulded projecting lintels and shutters. The recessed sash windows have 6/6 panes. The entrance door is located centrally within the five-window section on the left and is framed by a two-column Tuscan porch with a flat top. There is a blocked window above the door that is covered by a signboard. On the south end, there is a one-story canted bay window with small paned sashes. At the southeast corner, there is a slightly taller two-story rear block made of yellow brick, featuring dentilled eaves courses and segmental arched sash windows. The Feathers Inn has been on this site since 1617 and was said to have stabling for 100 horses in the early 19th century.
