Description

Milestone, dating from around 1742, originally for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The front is covered by an iron lettered plate added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. It is made of white freestone and features a cast iron front plate. The milestone is a square stone pillar facing west, measuring about 400mm square and 750mm high. It has a large front plate with a rounded top. The plate has a segmental top and a raised edge bead, with the inscription 'LONDON/32/WARE/11/BARKWAY/3'. The first and last names on the plate are raised in segmental arcs.
