Description
Ashdown House is a house built between 1832 and 1833, designed in the Regency style. It is constructed of yellow brick and features a steep slate hipped roof with a plastered soffit under a deep overhang. The building has two storeys, a cellar, and attics, and is set back from the road with a forecourt.
The house has a double pile plan with end chimneys and a centrally located staircase at the rear, which includes a round-headed window. The symmetrical east-facing front has three windows and is highlighted by a projecting Greek Doric stucco porch with a full entablature and fluted columns, raised on a plinth with four stone steps.
The windows are set in full-height recesses with square heads. The upper windows feature flat gauged arches, while the ground floor and basement openings have deep segmental gauged arches. The recessed sash windows have 6/6 panes and margin panes. The entrance includes a five-panel door topped with a semi-circular traceried fanlight. The forecourt wall is topped with Portland stone capping and has cast iron railings.
