Description

Japonica Cottage is an early 18th-century house located on the west side of Hare Street in Horeham. It is a timber-frame building with a black stucco plinth, plastered walls and a weatherboarded upper part to the south gable. The roof is steeply pitched with old red tiles, and a pantiled lean-to extends from the south end. The house has a two-story, two-cell plan with an internal chimney and a lobby entry facing east. The symmetrical east front has two windows and a central door. The upper floor has two-light flush casement windows. Ground-floor windows include a two-light Yorkshire sliding casement to the right of the door and a small, 12-pane 19th-century shop window to the left, with a fascia and pilasters. The front door is six-panelled, moulded, and set within a moulded surround, topped by a flat moulded hood supported on cut brackets with a panelled soffit and guttae. A weathered rear wing extends to the northwest.
