Description

This milestone, located opposite the Post Office in Hare Street, was constructed around 1742 for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The front of the milestone is covered by an iron lettered plate, added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. It is made of white freestone and features a cast iron plate. The stone pillar is rectangular, measuring approximately 400 mm by 350 mm and standing 750 mm high, facing east from the back of the footpath. The front of the milestone has a rounded top, with a segmental top to the plate, a raised edge bead, and an inscription that reads 'LONDON/31/WARE/10/BARKWAY/4'.
