Description

A barn dating to the 16th century, with later alterations in the 18th century, is located at Balons Farm. Originally a timber-frame structure, it has been plastered and now has a steeply pitched roof covered in black corrugated iron. The barn is a tall, single-aisled building facing east, with a gable end facing the street. There are double doors on the east side. A lower range extends to the southeast, and a lean-to roofed section is attached to the left of the doors. A catslide projection is at the rear. The barn’s original 16th-century design includes two bays of an aisled barn with free-standing posts and double braces. A later 18th-century section was originally unaisled but now has an outshot opposite the double doors with a higher wall plate. The lower purlin is supported by raking struts and the upper purlin is clasped by a collar.
