Description

This is a pair of barns, dating back to the 17th century, which have been converted into a house and attached barn, located near Chippperfield. Originally part of Tenements Farm, the barns are timber-framed with brick sills and old red tiled roofs. The house section has an exposed timber frame with brick infill, while the barn is dark weatherboarded. The barns were joined at right angles. The west barn has been converted into a two-storey house with four structural bays. It features a gabled former porch on the west side, in the second bay from the south, and a rear aisle under a catslide roof. A 20th-century gabled extension is at the rear of the same bay. Dormers with 2-light, flush, leaded casements are set into the west eaves. Three 3-light casements are on the ground floor, with a mid-height rail featuring curved tension bracing above. Chimneys have been inserted into the north gable and the centre of the building. The roof is an inclined queen-post construction with clasped-purlins, diminished principals and single purlins on each side, featuring wide framing and tension bracing. The north barn is of a similar structure, with the west bay adapted for domestic use. The property was formerly known as The Cottage.
