Description
The Hay Barn at Frenches Farm is a 16th-century barn that was relocated from closer to the road in the 20th century. It features a timber frame set on a red brick sill and is covered with dark weatherboarding and a steep old red tile roof. The barn has three tall bays and faces west, with double doors on opposite sides of the middle bay. It includes jowled posts made from large scantling, with long curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams. The roof is constructed with queen-strut and collar trusses, featuring clasped purlins and very wide flat rafters. The walls have alternating wide and narrow studs, with a deep mid-height rail that is tenoned in-line. There are slots for wind braces, although these are now absent.
