Description

Frenches Farm is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates back to the 17th century, with the northwest rear wing featuring a brick inscription 'WA 1758', and a northeast rear wing that was added in 1956. The southern range is timber-framed with red brick infill on the south side, a brick-cased ground floor, a tile-hung west gable, and red brick casing on the northwest wing. The northeast wing is entirely brick. The house has steep old red tile roofs and is two storeys tall, with attics and a cellar. It faces south and has a 1½ storey eastern part with parallel gabled rear extensions. The entrance is located at the north end of the west wall of the northwest rear wing, accessed through a six-panel door set in an open pedimented doorcase. The south front features two windows on each floor and a central plank door. The 18th-century windows are two- and three-light leaded casements with metal opening lights and rectangular quarries. The north side of the building has two brick gables, each with segmental arches over flush box sash windows containing eight-over-eight panes on both floors. There is a pump on the left-hand gable. The structure includes jowled posts, curved braces to the tie-beam, convex curved braces in the walls, long cambered collars, and a clasped-purlin roof with angled queen-struts. The southern range has a large chimney at the eastern end and another chimney at the junction with the northeast wing, which includes a bread oven. The northwest wing has a chamfered crossbeam, and there is an axial beam in the lower eastern part.
