Description
The south-east barn at Frenches Farm is a Grade II listed building, originally constructed in the early 17th century, with the northern part dating from the late 17th century. It was converted around 1973 and is now part of an adjoining house. The barn features a timber frame that is dark weatherboarded, topped with steep old red tile roofs. It has five bays and is unaisled, facing east. In the center, there is a projecting gabled porch, with gabled double doors on the opposite west side. The east and south sides have lean-to extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The southern three bays have jowled posts, straight braces leading to cambered tie-beams, angled queen-posts, and one clasped purlin on each slope. The two later northern bays feature unjowled posts with straight braces and a squint-butted scarf joint in the wallplate. The roof has inclined queen-posts with one clasped purlin on each slope, and added collars in the trusses.
