Description
Heywood's is a former farmhouse and barn that has been converted into two houses. The farmhouse dates from the 17th century, while the barn is from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and five brick chimneys.
The former farmhouse, located on the right, is two stories high and has three bays. The end bays have three-light wooden casements set under chamfered lintels. There is a projecting rubble band at the first floor, and the upper windows are in original gabled half-dormers with plain barge boards. Access is through a door located behind a 20th-century open stone gabled porch. Decorative running vine leadwork is present on the eaves between the dormers. Inside, there is an internal cross-passage with the main room to the left and a pair of rooms to the right. The main room features a fine fixed court or bread cupboard to the left of the fireplace, and the ceiling beams are chamfered. The timber-framed partition walls, which are now hidden, and the roof structure remain intact.
To the left is the converted barn, which has a rectangular plan with partial outshuts to the rear. The front is irregular, two stories high, and has three bays. The left end bay retains part of the original barn, featuring a six-pane window and rubble modillions at the eaves. The other two bays have gabled half-dormers with three-light wooden casements above and two casements and a door below. At the rear, the two-story element under a gable includes a loading bay and an arm in the upper storey.
