Description

Orchard House is a former farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations to the facade made in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed, squared buff sandstone rubble, with red sandstone dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof along with two plastered brick gable chimneys. It is 2½ storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-bay front. The end bays have two-storey canted bay windows with tall ovolo-moulded stone mullions that support coped balconies leading to three-light ovolo-moulded half dormers, which have stone-coped gables and ball finials. The entrance door is set under a rebated and chamfered lintel, with a two-light window above it. The rear and sides of the house display a mixture of early 17th-century tall two and three-light chamfered stone mullions.

Inside, the internal walls are made of rubble stone. There is an early 17th-century turned baluster staircase with a moulded handrail and square newels. Beneath the stairs, there is panelling and a six-panelled door with fluted rails leading to the cellar. A similar door is found above, while the remaining doors on the lower storeys are early 17th-century two-panelled doors with raised fields and wooden latches. The ceilings feature chamfered beams, and massive ridge and purlins rest on the internal stone walls.
