Description

No. 9 Moss Brow is a former farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early 17th century with 20th-century alterations and small additions. It is constructed of coursed buff sandstone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof with stone-coped gables, one topped with ball finials, a stone ridge, and a stone chimney. The house has a rectangular plan and was originally positioned at right angles to the street. It is three stories high with a two-bay street front. The front has three-light 20th-century wooden casements set under original rubble hood moulds. There is a half-hidden two-light rubble window with chamfered mullions that lights a barrel-vaulted cellar, and a blocked small circular light in a lozenge-shaped stone in the gable. The south front features two rubble hood moulds.

Inside, the house has exposed timber and small framed partitions. The early 17th-century dogleg stairs have pierced and shaped balusters and square newels. The ceiling beams are chamfered with tongue stops. There is a 17th-century six-panelled door with reeded rails and two three-board doors with original hinges and latches. Original floorboards remain on the first and second floors.

The house was extended by the addition of No. 11 in the later 17th century, which involved the partial demolition of the north wall and its replacement with poor quality timber framing.
