Description

Nos 10 and 12, along with the front railings, are a house and former surgery dating from around 1830. The house was originally a doctor’s house and surgery, and is now a house and shoe repairers. The main house is constructed with Flemish bond brick in an orange-pink colour, with buff sandstone dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof and two brick chimneys. The design is asymmetrical with three bays on the front elevation. It features an ashlar sandstone plinth. The windows are 12-pane sashes, set beneath gauged and rubbed cambered brick heads with panelled stone sills below, and plain stone sills above. One window in the upper part of the central bay has been blocked. A bead moulded, semi-circular doorcase with moulded imposts and a carved keystone frames the entrance, which has a fanlight with radial glazing bars and marginal lights, and an eight-panelled bolection moulded door. A projecting cornice and a low blocking course are also present. To the left of the main house is the former surgery, which has a stuccoed front with three bays. It has six-panelled doors to the left and centre, and a 16-pane sash window above the right-hand bay, with a 20th-century window below. A flagged pavement sits in front of both buildings, raised on rubble walls with steps at the right end and to the surgery door. In front of No. 12 are heavy spear railings, with lighter spear railings, scrolls, and dog bars. One gate designed for mounting a horse survives, while the others are missing. The group value lies in the building’s well-preserved architectural details and historic association.
