Description

Barley Grange is a former farmhouse and farmbuilding that has been converted into a house. It has an early 17th century core, with a later 17th century addition on the left, alterations from the late 18th century, and significant additions from the late 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared buff sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and four stone chimneys. It has a rectangular plan and stands 2½ storeys high with a six-bay front.

The two bays on the left have a tall, chamfered stone mullioned window with two and three lights, featuring lattice-leaded lights. Above this is a 19th century four-light mullioned window. There are projecting rubble bands at the first and second storeys. The central three bays display a mix of two and three-light wooden casements and horizontal sliding sashes, all with glazing bars, except for a timber-framed bay window and porch. To the right, there is a three-storey, canted bay window with 12 and 16-pane sashes. On the left, there is a 19th century lean-to stable and a former steam-driven electric generator house.

Inside, the original core features small timber-framed walls with lathe and plaster infill. Some ceiling beams are chamfered with tongue stops, while others have flat and tongue stops. The roof structure includes two trusses with tiebeams and two queen posts supporting the collar. The later work in the interior is considered unexceptional.
