Description
The Corner Shop is a former house that now serves as a house and shop. It has a core dating from the 17th century, with a rainhead dated 1721 and alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed, squared buff sandstone rubble, with sandstone dressings, a Kerridge stone-slate roof, a stone ridge, and one brick and one stone chimney.
The south front is two stories high and nearly symmetrical, featuring three bays. The end bays have three-light wooden casements with glazing bars, which are set under hood moulds below, and similar two-light windows above in stone-coped gabled half dormers. The central bay also has two-light windows under a hood mould. Although this front is a 19th-century alteration, it includes a rainhead inscribed with "RMW 1721," which was likely brought in from elsewhere. There is a door in the west gable framed by an ashlar surround.
Inside, there is a 17th-century dog-leg staircase with serpentine flat balusters and square newels, along with some re-used wooden panelling in the stairwell. A tall two-light chamfered stone mullion window lights the stair, and there are others that have been recently removed from the rear. Additionally, there is a three-board door with a wooden latch leading to the cellars.
