Description
High Stile is a house located on Stortford Road in Great Dunmow, dating from the mid-17th century, and possibly earlier. It features a timber-framed structure with plaster and concrete plain tile roofs, gabled at the west end and with a hipped crosswing at the east end. The building has a 'T' shaped plan, with the crosswing comprising two storeys while the rest is one storey with attics.
The front of the house includes a 20th-century gabled porch, two gabled dormers, and a mix of old, cast iron, and 20th-century casements, all fitted with leaded lights. There is an off-centre ridge line stack above a large 17th-century inglenook fireplace. Inside the crosswing, the mid-17th century timber framing is visible, featuring jowled posts and straight bracing halved into the studs within the front 'solar' bay. The rear framing is less organized, and the central truss has serpentine curved queen struts that support the side purlins of the roof. The hall is contemporary or possibly older, with an inserted floor, while the west end bay is a 20th-century extension.
