Description

55 and 57 Stortford Road is a house that was formerly a public house, dating from the late 14th century and the 16th to 17th centuries. It features a timber frame with plaster and has gabled roofs covered in peg tiles. The building has a 'T' shape, with a hipped roof and white weatherboarding on a later outbuilding at the rear of the west end.

The front of the house includes a crosswing at the east end, which has a cast iron, leaded light window above a rectangular bay window with small panes, along with a wrought iron sign bracket. The main block has a very small gabled dormer on the front roof slope and two large cast iron leaded light windows on the first floor, situated above a lean-to porch with brick steps and a painted timber handrail. Additionally, there is a two-light iron leaded light casement window and a slightly bowed similar window. The west gable features a four-light leaded light casement above a 19th-century leaded light square bay window.

There is a lean-to on the east flank of the crosswing and an off-centre large stack at the front of the ridgeline, along with a stack against the east end of the crosswing. Inside, the building reveals a fairly complete frame of the late 14th-century crosswing, although it lacks its central crownpost. The "hall" range suggests it was raised in the early 17th century.
