Description

The Swan is a house, now a public house, likely dating from the late 16th to 17th century, with later alterations. It is timber-framed with plaster infill, with much of the timbering now hidden behind plaster and painted brick. The roof is slate, and there are brick stacks. The building has a T-shaped plan, comprised of a north/south main range and a two-bay cross-wing at the north end. It has a cellar and two storeys. The east-facing elevation, which faces the road, has a 4:1 window arrangement; four early 19th-century glazing bar casements are present, along with a mid-20th-century casement with two lights in the gable front. The ground floor has two more early 19th-century glazing bar casements, under cambered heads, to the left, a three-light early 20th-century casement roughly centered, and a two-light contemporary casement in the gable front. There are three entries: two juxtaposed under a flat canopy supported on brackets, with early 20th-century panelled doors, and a third at the junction of the cross-wing and main range, featuring a glazed door. Cellar access is provided by three entries with cambered heads on the left side of the main range. The rear elevation displays exposed timber-framing to the cross-wing and part of the main range. Inside the cross-wing are heavy ceiling beams and some wattle-and-daub infill to the wall-framing. Further heavy ceiling beams are present throughout the main range. The cellar contains a raised cast iron hearth to the south end with a large sway above. Group value derives from its representation of a traditional timber-framed building in the region.
