Description

A house, likely dating from the 17th century, that has been divided into two separate dwellings at 22 and 24 Watling Street. The building underwent alterations and extensions in the mid-19th century, with a further extension added to the north in the 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with a sandstone rubble plinth supporting a timber-frame. Some sections of the timber-frame are exposed, others are covered with plaster panels or rendered. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, and has sandstone rubble and brick stacks.

The building has a rectangular plan aligned north/south and includes a cellar. It is two storeys high with an attic. The west-facing elevation has two windows, including a 2-light casement and a 3-light casement on the ground floor, and a 4-light casement to the right of the ground floor. There are two entries in the centre of the elevation; the left entrance serves number 22, which is rendered, and the right entrance leads up three stone steps to number 24. Number 24 showcases exposed timber-framing rising four panels high from the plinth to the front wall-plate, above which the roof has been raised. The north gable has a rendered ground floor and exposed timber-framing above, featuring angle struts to the corner posts. The timber-frame incorporates a tie-beam, raking struts, king-strut, and V-struts above the collar. A 2-light casement is located on the first floor. A canted, late 19th-century bay window is set against a low, mid-19th century sandstone rubble extension on the ground floor. The interior features heavy, chamfered ceiling beams.
