Description
Westbury House is an early 19th-century house, incorporating earlier timber-framed elements. It is located on the Stortford Road in Great Dunmow. The house has a complex plan and is timber framed, plastered, and features a continuous front parapet. The roof is covered with peg tiles, and comprises several ranges: a long range running parallel to the street, with a hipped east end and a gable at the west; and three parallel ranges of roofs across a deep block at the west end. The east end projects slightly, displaying two double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panes on each floor, topped by a painted timber cornice that extends across the main block. The main block has five similar double-hung sashes on the first floor, over four on the ground floor, and an off-centre porch with a flat-topped Doric column. A curious fanlight-like motif is visible in the middle of the wall, linked by thin strips to a door and window group below. A single-storey, gabled block with a slate roof and a recessed sash window with small panes sits near the west end. Numerous ridge line stacks are present. The interior reveals evidence of earlier timber framing and early 19th-century decorative details.
