Description
A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a 19th-century refronting. The houses are timber-framed and plastered, with a gabled roof covered in peg tiles. The front elevation features pilaster-like strips along the edges and over the party wall. Number 61 has three double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panes, above a central doorcase with a flat hood, scroll brackets, and a four-panel door with a rectangular two-light fanlight. There are similar double-hung sash windows on either side, and a flight of steps and a tubular handrail leads to the entrance of number 61. Number 63 is similar in appearance, but has 20th-century small-pane casements in place of the two ground floor windows. A central plaque under the eaves reads "Alpha Cottages 1864". The interior reveals the earlier timber-framed building with the 19th-century refronting and partial raising. There are two cast-iron leaded-light casements, one on the back wall of number 61 and one in an internal wall. A central ridge line stack is located on the party wall, with an inglenook fireplace below in number 63.
