Description
These are a pair of houses located on Stortford Road, Great Dunmow, dating to the late 16th century and the mid 18th century. They are timber-framed structures, now plastered, with a gabled roof covered in peg tiles.
The front of the houses has a mix of 20th-century small-pane casement windows, with a flat-topped canted bay featuring 19th-century casements. Number 20A has a hood with an open pediment supported by small, straight brackets. Number 20 features a particularly fine early 18th-century doorcase, incorporating fluted Doric columns, an open pediment with rosettes in the metopes, a rusticated surround, and a six-panel door. A wrought iron sign bracket is located at the east end. There is one small stack along the ridge line.
The interior reveals a former crosswing at the east end, which remains discernible on the rear of the building and features side purlins, wind braced to the roof. To the west, a two-storey timber-framed structure with a framed side purlin roof, likely dating from the early 17th century, is present. A further gabled, two-storey block extends to the rear, also dating from the 17th century.
